The North West School of Radiology was formed in 2017 through the merging of two very successful radiology schemes; Manchester and Mersey.  The school has over 200 trainees and will intake 45 ST1 places for 2023/2024 in Clinical Radiology. The School also oversees and additional training placements in Nuclear Medicine.

In 2018 NWSOR introduced the NW Radiology Academy with a full time 4 month classroom based training rotation for ST1 trainees. The rotation provides teaching programs in core radiology knowledge, ultrasound skills and preparation for FRCR1a examinations.

In 2022 the NWSOR joined the North West Imaging Academies Hub and expanded Academy programmes for ST2 Postgraduate Drs in Training, including classroom based, online and simulation teaching programmes. All these programmes focus professional and modern educational development for the future Radiologist workforce within the NHS and retaining talent within the North West of England.

“Developing programmed specialty year group teaching across linked classrooms represents an innovation not solely within the New Academies construct but also within School of Radiology teaching nationally.  Educators working within an interconnected learning network maximise their influence and cater to more learners. The initiative represents a potential exemplar in digital education that aims to compliment the learning experiences occurring within clinical placements. We hope today’s clinicians can become tomorrow’s educators so that today’s learners can become tomorrow’s clinicians.”
